Atmel Releases New Flash C51 Microcontrollers for One-Chip USB Device Solutions

NANTES, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 31, 2003--Atmel(R) Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML) announced today the availability of the AT89C5131 and AT89C5132, 8-bit Flash microcontrollers featuring an integrated full-speed compatible USB 2.0 controller and advanced on-chip peripherals. Targeting a wide range of market segments such as security applications, industrial and communication equipment, PC and peripherals, the AT89C5131 and AT89C5132 offer manufacturers a unique opportunity to quickly and easily integrate a USB full-speed interface, thus drastically reducing cost and time-to-market of products with USB interface.

The AT89C5131 and AT89C5132 microcontrollers feature 32- and 64-Kbyte on-chip Flash memory respectively, a full-speed USB controller with isochronous and bulk modes allowing easy high speed transfer. They also have a highly-flexible self-programming capability offering remote programming and field upgrade capabilities via the USB bus from, for example, a web server or via a customer defined UART interface. Both have the power and versatility required in industrial equipment for USB communications. AT89C5131 is a general-purpose USB microcontroller targeted towards the computer and industrial equipment markets. It has a keyboard interface, a 1-Kbyte EEPROM and SPI well suited for applications such as high-end keyboards, fingerprint and bar code readers.

AT89C5132 combines in a single chip interfaces to most major consumer mass storage devices, including IDE/ATAPI for HDD, CD/DVD and CompactFlash(TM), MultiMediaCard(R), DataFlash(R), Nand Flash or SmartMediaCard(R). AT89C5132 also provides a full range of man machine interface capabilities such as key interface, LED drive, interface to LCD, a 10-bit A/D converter for battery supply control, and even voice recording. With the AT89C5132, a wide range of drivers and source code examples are available for fast and easy development of new applications. Typical applications would include Flashcard reader/writers, Flash disks, image tanks, audio peripherals and games.

"These two USB devices add to the rich family of Atmel USB products. USB is entering into more and more applications, supporting which, Atmel has a wide range of devices to choose from," said Manish Vadher, Marketing Director for C51 Microcontrollers. "The unique combination of Atmel's Flash self-programmability and USB controllers in AT89C5131 and AT89C5132 microcontrollers constitutes a step forward in feature upgrade and maintenance for the end-user."

Small footprint and low-profile packages such as MLF/QFN48, SO28, VQFP64 and PLCC52 are available for AT89C5131 and VQFP80 for AT89C5132; both products are available in industrial temperature range. Production volumes are available now. Pricing is $3.90 for 10,000-unit quantity for AT89C5131 and $5.50 for 10,000-unit quantity for AT89C5132.

A full set of support tools is available, including hardware emulators, software compilers and starter kits.
